“Many businesses are struggling during the current covid-19 pandemic, which in turn affects those who rely on the jobs provided. A national retailer in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry wanted to assist CMT suppliers to move with speed from their standard operations to manufacturing cloth facemasks. These stakeholders approached Pierre Quoilin of Pro-Opt, a process engineering business to help. Pro-opt developed an information pack for CMT businesses and in this pack; they wanted to include a video clip as part of the instructions. Having seen a video online made by Kyle Brand, Industrial Design lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology, giving instructions on making a face shield using a clear plastic bottle. Pro-Opt asked Brand if he could make a similar video for them but for cloth facemask instructions. Kyle Brand saw this is a potential triple win, help in the fight to stop the spread of covid-19, assist small businesses during this trying time and use the process and content of developing the video as potential online lessons for his Industrial Design students.”
